Ukaurora.info is an open-source project that provides real-time visual detection of the Aurora Borealis using a high-quality camera installed in Dinnington, just north of Newcastle Airport.
Unlike traditional aurora checkers that rely on geomagnetic activity sensors and space weather predictions, ukaurora.info captures images of the northern sky from sunset to sunrise and uses AI technology to detect auroras.
When an aurora is spotted, the latest image is immediately displayed on the site.
Based on data from multiple sources, including geomagnetic activity sensors, satellite data, and weather forecasts, we provide an estimate of the likelihood of seeing the Aurora Borealis in the UK. Our prediction system gathers information in real-time and calculates the probability of an aurora being visible, factoring in conditions that may impact visibility.
The traffic light system below indicates the likelihood of an aurora being visible tonight. Green suggests low likelihood, while amber and red suggest increasing chances of visibility, especially in Northern England and Scotland.
